Makamo wa Kwanza wa Rais wa Zanzibar, Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad

Zanzibar First Vice President and the opposition Civic United Front secretary general, Mr Seif Sharif Hamad, has defended his party’s role in the government of national unity with CCM. Mr Hamad was speaking to the Executive Administrative Council of the CUF in Dar es Salaam yesterday, when given an opportunity to address the members of the council. He was attending the first party meeting since he was sworn in.

He said the tenth amendment of the Zanzibar Constitution and his party’s manifesto has enabled CUF to join the government of national unity in Zanzibar.

Explaining whether being part of the government of national unity indicates that CUF has merged with CCM, Mr Hamad said as his party was meeting high ranking government officials to examine the electoral process and strategise for 2015.

“Actually we need to evaluate the whole process and strategise for the forthcoming 2015 General Election and CUF will continue to remain an opposition party,” said Mr Hamad.

Explaining his experience of the new post and the hopes of the Zanzibaris, Mr Hamad said it’s high time for the Isles cabinet to serve all the Zanzibaris irrespective of their political affiliation.

“We have great challenge ahead. The government of national unity carries hopes and aspirations of the Zanzibaris…they expect the government to push for development,” Mr Hamad noted

However, he asked all ministers from his party to work compassionately for the interest of the Isles and its people and to pave the way for peaceful 2015 General Election.

In his remarks, the party chairman, Prof Ibrahim Lipumba, said the government of national unity has been the CUF agenda all along since 1995and it has come to materialize. He said the government of national unity is not just there to affect democratization, but also to harmonize the peace and tranquility in Zanzibar.
